auditory sensitivity aids (flare: isolate, calmers, sleep)
non fic post, but something more suited to long form than sound-bites :)
STORY TIME: the year is 2016, every room i work in has loud fans, pumps, and other assorted sounds. it turns out that the operating sound of roughing pumps, pulse tube pumps, and clean room hvac systems both exhaust me and give me headaches. unfortunately, i can't block out all sound (noise cancelling headphones is a no) because sound is an important diagnostic and safety feature. a kickstarter campaign appears in my awareness sphere for flare isolates, which supposedly filters certain frequencies out. what the heck. i'll give it a try.
it turns out these worked WONDERFULLY for me. (and then i lost one on a plane and never replaced them so i just hashtag suffered.) but the initial model is now discontinued/replaced so MOVING ON. this is a review(????) of the three flare audio products i'm currently using to manage Sound Issues. the tl;dr review:
isolates cut out certain frequencies, lower volume, great at concerts, human voices are very clear. do very little against Daytime Big City Noises
calmers sounds are less 'spiky', does not dim volume, extremely subtle effect, not for everyone
sleepers more similar to isolates in form, less targeted 'filtering', sufficient sound damping against Nightime Big City Noises, still allows you to hear morning alarm (and presumably also smoke and CO alarms)
the BEST improvement from the originals? all of them can come with or can be attached to a lanyard 🤣
details to follow, especially on the calmers :3
(i would like to also try the loops as a comparison but they're a bit $$ier)
